A Charge To Husbands To Love Their Wives
Your charge comes from Ephesians 5 where you are told you are to love your wife “as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her.” If your marriage is the picture of Christ’s love for the Church then this means that your marriage should show each other and the world something of Christ’s love for His Bride. But, what might that look like on a day-to-day basis?
As beautiful as your wife looked on your wedding day, you need to remember that she is a sinner too! And that means that you must be gentle and lowly towards her, eager to forgive, ready to embrace her, and committed to loving her (especially when it’s not easy to love her!).
Your wedding vows are telling everyone that you are committed to showing her Jesus every day until He returns or until death. Jesus did not choose to love you when you were lovely. He doesn’t keep loving you because you love Him. Rather, He loves you with a steadfastness that not even your own sins can diminish. God has chosen you to be an instrument of sanctification for your wife. That’s a high calling! And it’ll only happen if you utterly depend upon Christ. It is only as you keep looking to the Word of God that you can show her Jesus and that your marriage can shape her to look like Jesus.
