Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery Of Who Loves Us
Our one Lord Jesus Christ is God and Man. His Person perfectly possesses two natures. He has two Minds—one Divine and one Human—yet we don’t have two separate Mediators. He has two natures but in no way is He two Persons. Jesus Christ is God and Man, one and the same Son, perfect in Godhead and perfect in Manhood.
This means we say “God things” about Jesus and “Man things” about Jesus. This one Person is inseparably truly God and truly Man. The God who is infinite, immutable, and eternal love (1 Jn. 4:8) is the Lord Jesus Christ who also grew as a man in His love for the Father and others in His life on earth (Lk. 2:52).
This Jesus is the one who has an emotional and passionate love for us as His human heart beats faster every time we look to Him in prayer (Song of Solomon 4:9). At the same time, He is God whose love for us isn’t bound by time nor has the capability (whether voluntary or involuntary) to increase or decrease since it is infinite. His love is fully, infinitely actualized for us at all times and even beyond time itself. Yet, He is also Man of Man which means His love for us truly sympathizes and feels for us. This love is the love of one Person, not two. This love is the love of the GodMan, the Lord Jesus Christ.
This wondrous mystery of the immutable God and mutable Man, impassible God and passible Man, infinite God and finite Man being in perfect union, without the natures mixing or being confused, inseparably and indivisibly in one Person who acts as both God and Man in their appropriate properties—what is a more wondrous mystery that is worthy of worship than Him?
This is who stands among us even when we lack so much love for Him.
