How To Be Amazed At God's Love For You
WHO Is It That Loves You?
1) Be amazed at Who loves you. It is one thing for you to get a text from an acquaintance saying they would love to get to know you more. It is another thing to get a text from Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk saying they want to get to know you more. Why? The “worth and value” of these men (not to deny the doctrine of the image of God — This is merely for an illustration).
The love of God will be seen as greater when the worth and value of God are seen in all its glory. He who is infinitely rich became poor (2 Cor. 8:9). Do you want to be amazed at God’s love for you? Study His greatness and glory in such a way that it always keeps in view His love for you.
WHAT Kind Of Love Does He Love You With?
2) Be amazed at the loveliness of His love for you. Study how pure, holy, wise, beautiful, patient, forgiving, atoning His love is for you. Turn the diamond to look at every facet of it. See how faithful, truthful, and covenantal His love is for you. See it manifested in nature and in His Word. See it in your past and in your present.
No one could love you so dearly and gently. No one could love you with such dogged-devotion. No one could love you with such an undistracted and undeterred love. No one could say anything to Him that would change His mind about you. No one could accuse you of anything (even if it is true!) that would change His tenderness towards you. No one could present any evidence to Him that might change His commitment to you. Just read Romans 8:31-39.
It is not just that He loves you but that He places on you such a love that is so lovely that only God Himself deserves such love (John 17). God does not give us the love we are capable of giving to Him (even if we had no sin). He gives us the love that literally could only be understood by God Himself in His infinite being.
How MUCH Does He Love You?
3) Be amazed at the strength and infinitude with which He loves you. He who is infinitely glorious and who loves you with such a lovely love, He loves you with such infinite power, devotion, and liveliness. His love is never dull or cold.
The same infinite and eternal love the Father has for the Son (a love which never got boring for all eternity!) is what Jesus prayed to the Father that we might also receive (Jn 17:23). In all eternity that love was bestowed upon His people and within a certain point in time the Holy Spirit helped us to start seeing it.
But, our beginning to see it was not the same time when God gave it (Eph. 1). Think of what holy love it must be that the Son is worthy of. Only infinite and eternal love is worthy of the Son. Anything less would be sin (and God cannot sin!). That is how much the Father loved Him. And the Son, so delighting in that Love, was willing to go to the Cross so that we might experience that same Love.
It is not a lesser love that we receive. It is not an “off-brand” version of that love. It is the real and same thing. God loves you (a finite being who is also totally depraved) with an infinite and eternal love. Since His love is infinite it cannot increase nor decrease. When we experience more of His love it is not Him loving us more but us understanding more of how much He has always loved us. Since His love is eternal it cannot end. There is nothing from A to Z, from Alpha to Omega, that can separate us from His love (Rom. 8:31-39 — NOT even your own sin!).
